What Is RPE in Lifting?

How hard a set was, out of 10. The top set lands on a 7.

RPE is Rate of Perceived Exertion: how hard a set felt, on a scale of 1 to 10. In lifting it's easiest to read as reps left in the tank. Finish a set, ask how many more clean reps you had. Three means a 7.

The scale

RPEWhat it feels likeReps left
10Absolute failure, couldn't do one more0
9.5Technical failure, maybe a half rep0 to 0.5
9Very hard, one more max1
8Hard, two more2
7Moderate, three more in the tank3
6Comfortable, four or more left4+
5Warm-up territoryMany

The rule: one top set at RPE 7

Your top set runs at RPE 7. Every set before it is a step up in weight. You leave three reps in the tank. You finish the set clean, not crawling.

Why a 7 and not a 10:

I trained the other way for years. Every set to failure, every session a war. You push a 10 in one session and train at a 6 for the next three. I wrote that story in How I Train Now.

How the sets before it climb

Same movement, same reps, rising weight. No percentages, no math. Just climb. Incline dumbbell press, working weight 100s for 6:

Each rung grooves the pattern without burning what the top set needs.

The exception

One or two sessions a month, push a top set to RPE 9 or 10 to check where your true numbers sit. That's the test, not the training.

When to add weight

When the top set at RPE 7 reaches the top of the rep range. Then add weight and drop back to the bottom of the range. The full rule.

In the app

Every program in The Shift runs on this. The log marks the last set of each lift as the top set. FOUNDATION is where to start if you're new to it: its first two weeks are for finding the weight that makes a 7.

Next: how long to rest between sets.
