How to Get Back in the Gym After a Long Break

Find your real numbers first. Then let the weight come back.

Months off, or years. The mistake is the same both times: walking back in and loading what you used to lift. The body you're bringing back isn't the one you left with. Start from the one you have today.

Weeks 1 and 2: find your numbers

Stop a set the moment the form changes. That weight is your starting point. Not your old best. Not what the guy on the next bench is lifting. Two weeks of honest sets give you numbers you can build on.

Three days, full body

Three non-consecutive days a week. Two full-body sessions, A and B, alternating: A B A one week, B A B the next. About 45 minutes. That's FOUNDATION, the program built for exactly this man.

Leave reps in the tank

Every lift climbs to one top set at RPE 7: three reps left. Coming back is when the ego wants a 10 the most. Don't give it one. What RPE 7 means.

Let the weight come back

Reps first, then weight. Hit the top of the rep range on your top set, then add the smallest jump and drop back to the bottom of the range. Small, consistent, compounding. The full rule.

Rest days count

Training is the stimulus. Recovery is the response. 7 to 9 hours of sleep is the single biggest training variable most men underuse. Real rest days mean rest, or an easy walk.

If a lift doesn't agree with you

Swap it. No exercise is mandatory, the movement pattern is what matters. First time under a bar? Goblet Squat for the Back Squat, Dumbbell Bench Press for the Bench Press. Never push through pain. Discomfort is the game. Pain is the stop sign. Coming back from an injury? Get it cleared by a doctor first.

Next: how long to rest between sets.
